Subject To Change Wine Co "Sleepless Nights" Sunhawk Farms Red Field Blend 2020 - Mendocino, CA
Varietals: Grenache, Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne, Viognier
Everything that’s ripe is picked in two passes. Each pick represents between four and six varieties.
The fruit was then foot-crushed, macerated whole-cluster for three to five days and then pressed
to a tank. The juice was barreled down for fermentation and seven month elevage in a
combination of neutral 225L barrels and 500L puncheons. The two lots were racked together for
bottling. As always - unfined, unfiltered, no SO2.
The eight acres of grapevines found at Sunhawk Farms were planted twenty years ago by John Schaeffer, a pioneer of natural products and solar energy, who bought the 300-acre property and built an ideal retreat up the mountain next to Duncan Springs Peak. John’s Demeter-certified vineyard includes a 17th-century inspired lavender labyrinth at the top of the vineyard, a 2,500 tree olive orchard and 4 blocks of mixed (predominantly Rhône) red and white grape varieties planted on volcanic and serpentine soils. John and foreman Manuel Nunez are committed to developing and maintaining a biodynamic and self-sustaining ecosystem where biodiversity and regenerative practices are at the forefront. Vines are treated with herbs, minerals and manure, much of which are sourced from the property itself.
