Newfound Wines "Scaggs Vineyard" Mt Veeder Mourvedre 2017 - Napa Valley, CA
Varietals: 100% Mourvedre
Dark and structured, the wine shows flavors of ripe berries, meat, and earth, marked by well-integrated, grippy tannins.
Made up of certified organic Mourvèdre from the Scaggs Vineyard in Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley, the 18-year-old east-facing vines sit at an altitude between 1,100-1,400 feet above sea level. The soils are well-draining sandstone with a deeper mix of shale, aiken, and volcanic materials. The Vineyard was certified Organic by CCOF in 1998. Once harvested the grapes see a 5-day cold soak, 25% stem inclusion. They spend a total of 15 days on skins. The wine sees native yeast fermentation and age sur-lie for 11 months in 60% new oak.
Boz & Dominique Scaggs planted 2.2 acres to Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah & Counoise on their ranch at the northern crest of Mt Veeder in 1998. Situated on what was once a high valley lake; the soils are interspersed with gravely and Aiken loam deposits as you plunge the 300 vertical feet from top to bottom. One of the few remaining organic vineyards dedicated exclusively to these varietals in the Napa Valley, Scaggs is a cornerstone to Newfound’s production, operating with the strong principles they hold dear. Boz transitioned the vineyard over to Newfound, in its entirety in 2016.
Newfound Wines is a manifestation of a shared passion for wine and discovery between Matt and Audra Naumann—wine industry veterans and an agriculturally motivated family. In 2016 they founded a 40-acre ranch, vineyard, and winery in California’s Sierra Foothills to establish a legacy for their family and realize their dream to become first-generation grape growers and independent wine producers. Additionally, they source from several select grape growers that share their same set of convictions.
Newfound’s approach to the creation of wine comes from a place of humility and essentialism. They view farming as a connection not just to the land but to the universe, deeply acknowledging and respecting that nature is in control and understanding that our role is simply to listen and react. This nature-led farming informs Newfound’s winemaking process. They endeavor to take an individualistic approach and raise authentic wines that contain a naturally rugged edge and most importantly captures the voice of their vineyards
