GD Vajra ''Albe'' Barolo 2016 - Piedmont, Italy
”Albe” is a Barolo di Barolo from Vajra, a Barolo blended only from vineyards located within the Barolo comune itself. Unusually for Barolo, Albe is a rounder, ever so slightly softer expression of the Nebbiolo grape. Aged as all of Vajra’s Barolo are in a combination of stainless and neutral Slavonian oak, Albe sings with notes of plums and red berries, fresh hay, dried flowers, and a firm but graceful backbone of spruce tips and pine logs.
In any discussion of Piemontese wine nobility, the name Vajra should always come up. Founded in the 1880s but not transformed into its present incarnation until 15-year-old Aldo Vajra took over the estate in 1968, The G.D. Vajra (VI-ra) estate has since distinguished itself as one of Piedmont’s finest Nebbiolo houses. The estate is known not only for its extraordinary high-altitude Barolo, but for its uncompromising adherence to organic farming and its pioneering work creating biotypes of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto and preserving the “fourth grape” of the Piemontese trifecta, Freisa. Work has also been done at the winery on restoring to prominence the northern Italian dry rosato style known as Chiaretto.
